Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker To Live On Food Stamp Budget For One Week
The SNAP Challenge gives participants a view of what life can be like for millions of low-income Americans. Most participants take the Challenge for one week, living on the average daily food stamp benefit (about $4 per person per day). Challenge participants find they have to make difficult food shopping choices, and often realize how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods, and stay healthy.
So far he is two days into the challenge and has posted a video to share his experience with constituents and followers.
Booker told constituents about his first day on the SNAP challenge in a fire-side-chat-style video posted to WayWire, the social media site he co-founded.
The Newark mayor agreed to document his experience taking the SNAP challenge on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and WayWire. Booker, known for his social media savvy, has tweeted photos of his grocery receipt and his breakfast so far this week.
