Baby Born With HIV Reportedly Cured
A child born with HIV, has now been announced as completely free of the virus. “The Berlin Patient” isn’t the only individual said to be successfully “cured” from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Two-and-a-half years ago, a Mississippi baby born with HIV underwent an aggressive course of HIV-treatment drugs just a day after birth. Today, without use of treatment drugs, the toddler shows no traces of the virus in standard tests.
However, the term “cure” is used with caution. Although the baby’s HIV is undetectable and not detrimental to the baby’s health, special tests will reveal genetic material from the virus in the baby’s body.
“It’s not a true cure – what doctors call a “sterilizing” cure. There is still virus in the toddler’s body. But it’s not is a form that seems to be doing any damage. It doesn’t seem to be able to spread from one cell to another and it doesn’t seem to be damaging the child’s immune system.”
According to NBC, the mother’s HIV status was discovered later on in her pregnancy– which worried doctors. The earlier a mother is treated for HIV, the better the chances of her baby not contracting the disease.
In this case, the baby will remain off drugs and will be watched closely.
