Hugo Chavez Dead At Age 58
Reports on Tuesday, March 5 confirmed that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez passed away after battling with cancer for two years. Despite the controversy over his leadership, many supporters gathered together to mourn the death of the deceased president, who had been in office since the 90’s.
According to CNN:
The announcement of Chavez’s death came hours after Maduro met with the country’s top political and military leaders about Chavez’s worsening health condition and suggested someone may have deliberately infected Chavez with cancer.Supporters of Chavez poured into a Caracas square soon after news of his death spread. Some wept openly. Others waved flags and held up pictures of the late president.
As the country prepares for their leader’s funeral, they have announced that they will implement seven days of mourning and are asking that all citizens be supportive and reflective during this time. Because of his death and a law in their Constitution, an election for a new president must be held within 30 days.
Chavez’s death comes as the country’s relations with the United States continues to be faulty at best. Some skeptics within the Venezuelan government suspected the U.S. was somehow involved in infecting the leader with cancer.
