Proposition 8 Discussed At Supreme Court
The Supreme Court began hearing arguments on Tuesday over same-sex marriage, starting with a reevaluation of California’s ban on the matter, Proposition 8.
The high court will also discuss the federal law that prevents same-sex couples from receiving the same benefits heterosexual couples receive on Wednesday, according to Huffington Post.
There has been an increasing public support for marriage equality, and President Obama has weighed in on the issue, specifically in his second inaugural speech when he said:
“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal, as well.”
Same sex marriage is legal in the District of Columbia and the following 9 states: New York, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Maryland, and Washington.
