Is Guantanamo Bay Protecting Or Hurting Us?
President Obama recently renewed his pledge to shut down the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp which was established in 2002 by the Bush Administration to hold detainees thought to have ties in the “War on Terror.” Because the detainees are held without trial and forced to endure brutal treatment, there are currently about 100 prisoners on a hunger strike in protest. According to Obama, the prison “is not necessary to keep America safe. It is expensive. It is inefficient…[and] it is a recruitment tool for extremists.” We talked about both the human and financial costs of Guantanamo Bay featuring:
