Republican Infighting Over Immigration Bill
According to an article in The Blaze, 70 Republican Congress members are planning to go directly against House Speaker John Boehner to try and force an extended debate on an immigration bill.
The 70 members want to delay the vote on a bill that they feel will offer illegal immigrants amnesty and have “dire consequences” for the country. According to Michelle Bachman, the members spokesperson:
the group is invoking the Hastert Rule: requiring support from a majority of the majority to bring a bill forward.
While the group plans to hand the speaker their petition on Friday, there is a chance that some members will decide to take their names off, because of the move is something that many are calling high risk and capable of putting political careers at risk.
The Republican party has been at crossroads since the 2012 elections where President Obama easily defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney. The party vowed to do some soul searching and after a review of its structure and organization learned that they were struggling with several minority groups on key issues, specifically immigration reform.
