Marissa Alexander Case Receives Attention For Stand Your Ground
As the public continues to examine the implications of Stand Your Ground laws after Zimmerman’s acquittal, another Florida case that received little recognition in the past has now gained national attention.
Marissa Alexander, 32, stood her ground in 2010 when she fired a warning shot into the wall of her apartment in order to scare her abusive husband– she is now facing 20 years in prison.
According to Yahoo! Rev. Jesse Jackson visited Alexander three days after Zimmerman was acquitted to call attention to what he considers a “travesty” of justice.
“In one case Mr. Zimmerman kills a young man and walks away, free to kill again,” Jackson said. “And Marissa shot no one, hurt no one, and she’s in jail for 20 years.”
Alexander’s husband, Rico Gray, had previously been convicted of a domestic violence charge, and he allegedly walked towards Alexander threateningly before she fired the shot. But the prosecution says that when Alexander fired, she wanted to kill.
